At Nyth y Deryn we have a strong ethos towards learners mental health and wellbeing. We operate a Trauma Informed system with family dynamic being at the core of our practice. We know that the key to engagement with learners are the significant positive relationships that they make with staff. We harness these relationships through different strategies, the main one being PLAY. We know through our continuing study of learners development that a play activity in the morning releases the chemicals in the body that make us happy. This is why these activities are an integral part of our day.
These include bubble painting, making playdough and a variety of others.
Learners have a range of different regulation spaces to access when they are feeling sad, angry, frustrated.
These include;
Our outside spaces; play/regulation space and our garden.
Wellbeing rooms; if learners require either time with us or time on their own.
We have a dedicated Achievement Team who work on a one to one basis with learners if they require extra support.
We also have an onsite therapy dog called Oreo.
Oreo is a bouncy playful bundle of fun.
He is available for 1-1 interventions with staff, where learners can take him into the garden and let him run around, play ball and take him for a walk.
Oreo has achieved his Bronze and Silver Good Dog Award and is currently working towards his Gold!
